Is the new international version of the Bible accurate? ›

It is here that the NIV excels. It not only communicates the meaning of God's revelation accurately, but does so in English that is easily understood by a wide range of English speakers. It is as well-suited for expository preaching as it is for public reading and use in Bible classes and children's ministries.

In this way the NIV (compiled by Protestant churches) is not a Catholic bible. The Catholic Church does have several “approved” Catholic translations in English. These can differ by country, but almost all Catholics will use these rather than texts like the NIV compiled with a Protestant slant.

Chapter Context

After the devastation and destruction are over, God begins to dry out the earth in Genesis 8. The waters recede, Noah and the animals finally leave after a year aboard, and Noah offers animal sacrifices in worship to God. God commits to never again strike down all life on earth at once.

Dozens of evangelical denominations, churches, and seminaries embraced the NIV as their official Bible translation for preaching, study, public reading, and personal use. Forty-five years later, the NIV remains the most frequently used translation in churches across the US.

No single English translation will ever represent the original biblical languages perfectly. Why? In part because the Bible's ancient languages do not function like English. A word in Hebrew, Greek, or Aramaic might not have an exact English word to match.

The New American Standard Bible is a literal translation from the original texts, well suited to study because of its accurate rendering of the source texts. It follows the style of the King James Version but uses modern English for words that have fallen out of use or changed their meanings.

HarperCollins Christian Publishing division, which includes Zondervan Publishing, owns the licensing rights to the New International Version (NIV) translation—the most popular modern English translation of the Bible.

The new NIV retains 95% of the words of the 1984 edition, but where there are changes, it communicates the original meaning better to modern readers and more accurately than before. Let me address several issues: gender-neutral language, omission of words, and accuracy of translation.

As the ERV was based on older, and some said better manuscripts, it was supposed to be an improvement over the KJV in terms of accuracy. But it was so literal as to be almost unreadable, prompting Charles Spurgeon to say that it was strong in Greek but weak in English.
