What is the most popular soap making process? ›

One of the easiest ways to make DIY soap is with the cold process method, which involves combining oils and sodium hydroxide lye, causing a chemical reaction called saponification. In the process, you get to add oils, scents, and colorants to make your soap more personal to you.

Ancient Mesopotamians were first to produce a kind of soap by cooking fatty acids – like the fat rendered from a slaughtered cow, sheep or goat – together with water and an alkaline like lye, a caustic substance derived from wood ashes. The result was a greasy and smelly goop that lifted away dirt.

Animal fat was melted and added to the potash. The mixture was stirred until the chemical reaction turned the fat into soap. The soap was poured into wooden molds and allowed to cure. When it hardened, it was cut into bars.

Commonly referred to as MP, melt and pour soap making is probably the easiest way to get started with soapmaking. It's as simple as buying a commercial premade base of soap, melting it down, adding in your goodies (like scent, color, botanicals, and more), and letting it set up.

Personally, I use a substance called lye for soap making (also known as sodium hydroxide). Although most soap makers swear by this particular base, you can also use potash (potassium hydroxide). Lye tends to produce a better and harder bar of soap whereas potash produces a not so nice softer bar of soap.
